What are electrolytes?
Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals and compounds which produce ions when dissolved in a solution like blood, sweat, or urine.
The most important electrolytes in human bodies include:
- -Sodium
- -Potassium
- -Magnesium
- -Calcium
- -Phosphate
- -Chloride
- -Bicarbonate
How do they improve your health?
Electrolytes are very important for the body, they support the muscles, bones, nerves, heart and brain health. They are essential for multiple functions, allowing nutrients into the cells, expelling waste, and producing energy.
Some of the benefits includes:
- -Balancing blood pH
- -Muscle contract support
- -Cellular fluid balance
- -Regulating blood pressure
Why are they necessary in a keto diet?
On a keto diet the restriction of carbohydrates causes insulin levels to go low. Due to this, the kidneys excrete more sodium, which may disrupt levels of other electrolytes as well.
The body starts processing the electrolytes differently, and may lead to symptoms, often described as the “keto flu.”
Health effects: What happens if I am deficient in electrolytes?
Electrolyte levels can change in relation to water levels in the body, as well as other factors. In some circumstances, electrolyte levels in your blood can become too high or low, causing an imbalance. The most common imbalances occur when people are severely dehydrated due to diarrhea, vomiting or excessive sweating.
A rapid loss of fluids, can also affect the concentration of electrolytes, which can interfere to the way your body functions like:
- -Muscle weakness
- -Headaches
- -Fatigue
- -Mood changes
- -Vomiting
- -Loss of appetite
- -Muscle cramps
- -Stomach pain
- -Irregular heartbeat
- -Constipation
- -Frequent urination
- -Dry mouth
Is there a way to increase my electrolyte intake?
Electrolytes are found in many foods, including fruits, vegetables, dairy, nuts and seeds. Choosing the right electrolyte-rich food should be enough to reduce Keto Flu symptoms. Nevertheless, electrolytes supplements are a great option to boost the minerals intake.
